Custom apps and micro-apps
A custom app or micro-app is a small tool built around one process, when the software you already use still leaves people copying, searching, or checking by hand. It can be a dashboard or a simple screen for the records you keep. The aim is less time and less cost on those repeated steps, with a person checking exceptions.
When a small app fits
Try the tool you already have first. If it can carry the step once it is set up, use it. A custom app is for the gap that remains: extra copying, a field you cannot change, a review step the product will not hold, or a path the team will not follow. The app should replace that gap, not the whole operation.
Keep it to one process. Clear items follow the rule. Uncertain items wait for a person. Search, a filter, an export, or a summary are enough when that is what the work needs. A larger system is a different conversation. Process optimization and business process automation are the steps to consider first.
A built example
An operational dashboard for a membership organization is a micro-app of this kind. The organization is not named. The screen shows member profiles, applications, events, and registrations that already lived on the website and in lists, and it keeps payment checks with each event. Staff and volunteers open only the pages their role allows. It saves time on repetitive lookups and manual checking. That is a description of the work, not a measured result.
